Rachel Phan book launch at Laurier Brantford

Posted on September 16, 2026September 23, 2026 By Bruce Gillespie

I’m thrilled to announce that Laurier Brantford will host a stop on Rachel Phan‘s book tour next month, celebrating the launch of her new essay collection, That Asian Girl is a Problem, a ferociously smart, darkly funny essay collection that dismantles the stereotypes, sexualization, obedience narratives, and “model minority” myths imposed on Asian diasporic women.

Phan is the bestselling author of the memoir, Restaurant Kid, which was long-listed for CBC’s Canada Reads and named a Best Book of 2025 by CBC. She is also one of our alumni and a former student of mine in the Journalism program, so celebrating her achievements on campus is especially exciting for us. The event takes place Oct. 28, 2026, from 1:30 to 3 pm. This is a free event, open to all members of the Laurier community and the public, and you can reserve your ticket here.

This event is generously sponsored by the Wilfrid Laurier University Alumni Association.
